Johannes Echarius Carlos, or Jean Eugène Charles Alberti (1777–1843), was born in Maastricht, the Netherlands. He studied in Amsterdam and in Paris, where he met Jacques-Louis David and learned to copy the works of Dutch and Italian masters, both in paint and engravings. He also began to paint his own work. In 1843, he left Paris. Nothing is known of his life after this period, not even the date of his death.
