Cornelis van Haarlem

As his parents fled the Spanish army during the Eighty Years’ War, Cornelis van Haarlem (1562–1638) remained in the Netherlands, where he was raised by the painter Pieter Pietersz the Elder. After studying in Rouen and Antwerp, he returned to Haarlem, where he spent the majority of his life and gained popularity as a painter of biblical and mythical scenes.
